To make you familiar with FTP site properties

Purpose:

The purpose of this article is to make you familiar with FTP site properties.

Procedure:

In this article we will study the different properties of the FTP site created in the previous article.

Launch the FTP site properties window by right clicking and accessing its properties option from the following node in Internet Services Manager console as shown below.

FTP site properties window will look like this and the complete detail about its options is provided below.

FTP Site tab can be used to configure the following basic settings for the FTP site.

  • Description In Identification section is used to define a descriptive name for your FTP site to distinguish it from the other sites.
  • IP Address in Identification section is used to bind a particular IP address against this FTP site.
  • TCP Port in Identification section is used to define the TCP port number for the FTP site.
  • Unlimited option in connection section allows an unlimited number of simultaneous connections to the server.
  • Limited To option in connection section sets the maximum number of simultaneous connections allowed to the server.
  • Connection Timeout option in connection section sets the length of time before the server disconnects an inactive user. This ensures that all connections are closed if the HTTP protocol fails to close a connection.
  • Enable Logging option enables FTP site logging, which can record details about user activity and create logs in various formats. After enabling logging, select a format in the Active log format list.

Note: To configure the options for log file creation (for example, weekly, or by file size), or to configure properties for W3C Extended logging or ODBC logging, click Properties button.

The log formats are as follows:

    • Microsoft IIS Log Format: A fixed ASCII format. Its properties windows has the following features.

New Log Time Period settings are

Hourly Log files are created hourly.

Daily Log files are created daily starting with the first entry that occurs after midnight.

Weekly Log files are created weekly starting with the first entry that occurs after midnight Saturday.

Monthly Log files are created monthly starting with the first entry that occurs after midnight of the last day of the month.

Note "Midnight" is midnight local time for all log file formats except W3C Extended format. For W3C format, "midnight" is midnight Greenwich Mean Time by default, but can be specified as midnight local time.

Unlimited file size Data is always appended to the same log file. You can only access this log file after stopping the server.

When file size reaches A new log file is created when the current log file reaches a given size; specify the size you want.

Log file directory

Type the directory in which log files should be saved, or click Browse and locate the directory.

A file name is displayed beneath the Log file directory box; this name is determined by the log file format and the criterion used for starting new log files.

    • W3C Extended Log File Format: A customizable ASCII format, selected by default. It has the following characteristics.

General Properties tab has the following options.

When file size reaches A new log file is created when the current log file reaches a given size; specify the size you want.

Use local time for file naming and rollover Select this option to set creation time and naming format for W3C Extended Log files to midnight local time rather than Greenwich Mean Time.

Log file directory Type the directory in which log files should be saved, or click Browse and locate the directory.

Note: You cannot use relative path, UNC path or mapped drive for this directory. It should always be a local path.

A file name is displayed beneath the Log file directory box; this name is determined by the log file format and the criterion used for starting new log files.

Extended Properties tab can be used to define the logging values for your FTP site that should be logged.

    • ODBC Logging: A fixed format logged to a database.

Supply IIS with the Data Source Name and Table name by using this dialog box.

If a user name and password are required for accessing the database, supply them as well.

    • Current Sessions button is used to see the currently connected users to your FTP site.

Security Accounts Tab in the FTP site has the following options.

Allow Anonymous Connections option is used to define your FTP site publically available. Anonymous authentication gives users access to the public areas of your  FTP site without prompting them for a user name or password. When a user attempts to connect to your public FTP site, your Web server assigns the user to the Windows user account called IUSR_computername, where computername is the name of the server on which IIS is running.

For anonymous authentication, you can use the above stated user account or you can select another Windows account for this purpose by clicking Browse button to select the desired user name and its password.

Allow only anonymous connections option allows only anonymous connections. This means that users cannot log on with user names and passwords. This option prevents access by using an account with administrative permission; only the account specified for anonymous access is granted access.

Allow IIS to control password option when selected enables your FTP site to automatically synchronize your anonymous password settings with those set in Windows.

FTP Site Operators are a special group of users who have limited administrative privileges on individual FTP sites. Operators can administer properties that affect only their respective sites. They do not have access to properties that affect IIS, the Windows server computer hosting IIS, or the network.

By default, administrators are defined as FTP site operators.

To add a user account to the list of Operators, click Add button.

To remove the currently selected user account, click Remove button. To select multiple accounts, either hold down the CTRL key while selecting individual accounts or hold down the SHIFT key while selecting a range of accounts.

Note: You cannot remove the administrators from the FTP site operators.

Messages tab in the FTP site properties window is used to define the following type of messages.

Welcome message displays this text to clients when they first connect to the FTP server. The message is blank by default.

Exit message displays this text to clients when they log off the FTP server. The message is blank by default.

Maximum Connections message displays this text to clients that try to connect when the FTP service already has the maximum number of client connections allowed. The message is blank by default.

Home Directory tab is used to define the home directory options for your FTP site.

You can change the location of the home directory to one of the following:

A directory located on this computer is used to define the local path for your FTP site,

A directory located on another computer (a network share) option is used to define the UNC path for your FTP site whose home directory is located on another computer.. When prompted, type the user name and password needed to access that computer. To change the user name and password, click Connect As.

FTP Site Directory option define the local path or UNC path ( ComputerNameShare name) for your FTP site depending on the above selected option for your FTP site home directory.

In the text box, type the path to the directory or the destination URL. The syntax must match the selected path type:

Read option enables users to read or download files stored in a home directory or a virtual directory.

Write option allows users to upload files to the enabled directory on your server. Select this option only for directories that are intended to accept files from users.

Log visits option is used to record visits to this directory in a log file.

Note: Visits are recorded only if logging is enabled for FTP site. Logging is enabled by default. To turn off logging, select the FTP site, open its property sheets, click the FTP Site tab, and then clear the Enable Logging check box.

Directory Listing Style changes the directory listing style to send to FTP users.

MS-DOS directory listing style displays year dates in a two-digit format by default.

Note: You can change this setting to display year dates in a four-digit format by enabling the FtpDirBrowseShowLongDate metabase property.

UNIX directory listing style displays year dates in a four-digit format when the date of the file is different from the year of the FTP server.

Note:  No year date is returned in cases where the file date is the same as the year date of the FTP server.

Directory Security tab is used to define the allowed or blocked computer or range of computers for the access to your FTP server.

Click the Add button to define the IP address of a computer , or a range of IP addresses for a group of computers who have blocked or allowed for FTP access.
